This weeks recital is Allen Ginsberg’s poem “America”. Along with Howl, this is probably his most well-known piece, full of brutal, honest satire and rhetoric. Ginsberg has a great way of picking apart the dishonesty of society with a well-observed humour, which is offensive (to some), scathing and above all, honest. He always could weave a tale in the tradition of the best satirists, and that skill is no more apparent than in this piece. A true behemoth of modern literature, immortalised in this reading.
